Like a number of Jesuits around my time, I entered the Maryland Province Novitiate at Wernersville, immediately after graduation from a Jesuit high school, St. Joseph’s Prep in Philadelphia. The year was 1952. I went through the usual course of studies at that time: two years of novitiate and junior college at Wernersville, three years of philosophy (at a seminary in Shrub Oak, New York), three years of teaching high school at Loyola High School in Baltimore, four years of theology at Sacred Heart College in Woodstock, Maryland, one final year of ascetical training at the Shrine of the North American Martyrs in Auriesville, New York. In the summers of theology, I began a program of graduate studies in religious education at Catholic University of America, in preparation for teaching theology to high school students. I devoted myself to the ministry of secondary education, teaching theology for thirteen years at Loyola High School in Baltimore, and for sixteen years at Gonzaga High School in Washington. I also served on the Provincial's staff for six years as coordinator of high school ministries, 1985-1991. Teaching afforded me a chance to co-author a book entitled Introduction to Catholic Ethics, published by the National Catholic Educational Association in 2003. I served as rector of the Jesuit communities at both Loyola and Gonzaga. From 2003 to 2006, I served as director of the spiritual growth staff; then in August, 2006, I passed the directorship baton to Susan Bowers, but continue to function as a member of the spiritual growth staff.
