A DAY FOR SPIRITUAL DIRECTORS
ECOLOGY & IGNATIAN SPIRITUALITY:
Addressing the Ecological Crisis through the Spiritual Exercises
April 25, 2012
Yvonne Prowse

The Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius of Loyola have direct application to the understanding and healing of the ecological crisis our world faces. This program not only provides participants an opportunity to reflect on nature as revelatory of God. We will address the ecological crisis as a spiritual crisis and prayerfully look at it with God. We will engage the Spiritual Exercises to pray over ecological sin, especially the damage that consumerism is causing to the earth, as well as to seek hope and explore our role in bringing healing to the world. Ignatius’ Rules for Discernment will be considered in the context of our relationship with Creation. Within an Ignatian context we will stretch beyond cultural anthropocentric beliefs to experience our relationship with nature as a part of our relationship with God.

Yvonne Prowse is a spiritual director at Ignatius Jesuit Centre in Guelph, Ontario. She holds a Masters degree from Fordham University in spirituality and spiritual direction and has served as an adjunct staff of St. Ignatius Retreat House in Manhasset, NY. Yvonne has worked extensively in social ministries with people in poverty, and in peace, justice and environmental ministry. As executive director of the Jesuit Volunteer Corps for the California Province of Jesuits she helped engage the organization and volunteers in awareness and action for the environment. This program developed out of her masters thesis on How the Spiritual Exercises Can Help North Americans Address the Ecological Crisis; and out of her life-long commitment to spirituality and the environment.

God dwells in creatures; in the elements, giving them existence; in the plants, giving them life; in the animals, giving them sensation. - Ignatius of Loyola
